Advocacy

We utilize our unique position as ground-level service providers to advocate and organize for smarter economic and food justice policy.  Particularly, we are committed to measures that move hungry and food insecure families to economic self-sufficiency.

In direct dialog with those who we serve, we have developed three main policy priorities:

1) Access to Nutrition Assistance Programs

There are many programs at the Federal, State, and City levels available to low-income people which serve to alleviate hunger, put money in their pockets, and allow them the economic security and nutritional healthy they need as they move to ongoing employment and self-sufficiency.  These programs include:

Federal

(1) The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) (previously known as Food Stamps)
(2) The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Woman, Infants, and Children (WIC)
(3) School Meals and School Breakfast
(4) Summer Meals

(5) Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP)

(6) Senior Farmer's Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP)

New York State

(1) Health Bucks

New York City

Our Work: WHANAP supports each of these programs as effective means of poverty allivation.  We encourage and work for complete maximization of these programs by all elligible people and families in our communities.  As such, we promote transparent public knowledge of these programs and advocate to identify and address any access barriers to enrollment.

2) Child Nutrition / School Meals

3) Food Justice / Fair Nutritional Access For All
