About Us
History
In 1994, a group of soup kitchen and food pantry staff and volunteers joined together to form a community group with the primary mission of increasing the services and resources available to food program clients and customers. Today, the West Harlem Action Network Against Poverty (WHANAP) is working once again to restructure and solidify the relationships between neighboring food programs in the West Harlem, Morningside Heights, Upper West Side areas, and beyond.
Goals
• Share information, ideas, support and relevant resources. • Coordinate services among the various emergency food programs, social service organizations, community groups and faith-based groups doing anti-poverty work. • Foster self-empowerment among clients through advocacy and beyond emergency services. • Sponsor joint programs designed to assist the underserved population in the greater Morningside Heights and West Harlem communities. • Raise funds for program implementation and expansion through coordinated efforts. • Increase the nutritional content, quality and variety of the food served at emergency food programs in the West Harlem/Morningside Heights area. |
